Over the past four days I have walked my mother through a hard drive format and an upgrade to Windows XP Home, over the phone. The reason for this is because she wanted to learn how to do it herself. It’s fairly easy so I was pretty okay with this. I also had to walk her through driver upgrades/downloads over the phone. (For some reason she has misplaced all her software CD’s.) Again, fairly easy. Well after two days, she still had no sound on her computer. So over the past two days I’ve been trying to determine what is wrong with the driver upgrade, over the phone. We finally settled on trying to download the driver and reinstall it. She did that and it still didn’t work.
She called me just a few minutes ago and proceeded to tell me she figured out why she didn’t have sound. She said after redownloading and reinstalling and restarting and still not having sound, she went to the HP site and searched the Help Index. The first item on the checklist was to check the wiring. (Right about here I started laughing hysterically, I knew exactly what had happened.) She said she proceeded to look on the back of the tower and sure enough, the speaker wires were hooked into the wrong plug. Now while I’m laughing hysterically at this, not only because I find it funny but because it’s probably something I would do, my husband emails me from his phone in the bedroom. About the time I was actually starting to not laugh so hard, I got the email that said “What is so fucking funny?” This sent me into even more gales of laughter. I told my mom what he sent and even she started laughing.
So after all is said and done and laughed over, she finally, after four days has sound.
